Old Atmos building destroyed by intense fire

Daytime Skycopter images reveal the extent of the damage at the old Atmos Energy building on West Capitol Street. The entire roof collapsed into the structure, and while the shell of the building appears intact, it's been gutted.

On Tuesday night around 7, Jackson firefighters responded to intense flames, heavy smoke, and a big job for crews on the scene. Video from one of our series of tower cams captured the moment when the fire reached a power line and killed electricity to surrounding buildings.

"The cause of the fire has not been determined. It's gonna take us some time to be able to do that because of the magnitude, size of this building," says JFD Chief Fire Investigator Greg Travis. "We're not sure if somebody was in it, but we do know from reports that a window had been found open and perhaps another door was found open by firefighters."

Travis says his team will be speaking to people in and around the area to find out if they've seen any activity, or people going in and out of the building recently.

Hot spots were still being snuffed Wednesday afternoon, and that briefly delayed the investigation into the cause.
