It was an incident that sent shock waves through law enforcement ranks, and through a normally quiet Rankin county neighborhood. Hinds County Deputy Chris Smith and his wife Amber were found shot to death in their home, victims of an apparent murder-suicide.
Investigators say their children were apparently home at the time and heard the shots.
Deputy Chris Smith worked ten years at the Hinds County Sheriff's Department. Most recently he was assigned to narcotics, but worked for several years as a training officer.
"Chris was a good officer. I wanted everybody to know Chris was a good officer," said retired deputy Kay Waddell. "He'll be clearly missed."
Waddell says Chris Smith was looked up to by almost everyone in the department, especially after an incident in 2011, where he was credited for saving a baby's life.
It was deputy Smith who discovered an infant, Robert Carter the second, in a home in Terry.
The baby's parents, Robert Carter senior, and mother Renitra Mark had been murdered. Little Robert Carter had been left alone there for over two days.
"He picked that baby up changed the baby's diaper, got a milk bottle in the fridge, took that out, warmed it up, took care of that baby first," said Waddell. "Once he got the baby quiet, consoled the baby, he handed the baby over to me. That's just what kind of person Chris was."
While investigators try to determine what went wrong inside the home, those that knew Deputy Chris Smith say they remember him as a good spirited officer, who loved his job, and his family.
Funeral arrangements for Deputy Smith are now complete. They will be held at 11 am Monday morning, at St. Columb's Episcopal Church located at 550 Sunnybrook road in Ridgeland.
