Psychiatrist weighs in on death of Hinds Deputy and wife

RANKIN COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Family and friends of Hinds County Deputy Chris Smith and his wife Amber are still grieving their loss.

The Rankin County Sheriff's Department is still investigating what exactly happened inside their Brandon home.

Sheriff Bryan Bailey said the couple was found dead inside the master bedroom. The couple had two children. The two girls were inside of the home during the shooting.

Our Annette Peagler spoke to local psychiatrist Dr. Clyde Glenn, who has over 20 years of experience in the psychology field.

"Even though they didn't witness it directly themselves they were certainly in close proximity, they heard the gun shots and that in it of itself knowing that their mother and father were both lost in this unfortunate incident could have a seriously emotional impact," Dr. Glenn explained.

Dr. Glenn treats patients of all ages who have dealt with similar tragedy. He says getting early treatment via therapy is key.

"...Actually be appropriately assessed and evaluated for the possibility of depressive symptoms, anxiety as well as post-traumatic stress symptoms," he explained.

One of the children told Rankin County investigators she heard her parents arguing. Sheriff Bryan Bailey says the couple went inside of the master bedroom, then two gunshots were fired.

Dr. Glenn said supporting the children emotionally as much as possible and surrounding them with love will help them through this difficult time.

"I think that's very important to have those services available to them and for family members to seek those services as soon as possible to assure that those kids are receiving all the help that they need in every area," he explained.

The girls are in the custody of their grandmother.

Deputy Smith will be laid to rest at St. Columb's Episcopal Church in Ridgeland Monday at 11 a.m. Funeral arrangements for Amber Smith are pending.
