Severe weather left damage in parts of Kansas and Missouri, spawning damaging winds, large hail and at least two tornadoes.
A tornado was spotted in rural Bastes County near Hume, MO, early Sunday evening. The tornado was first seen in Pleasanton, KS, before crossing over into Missouri.
Linn County emergency manager Douglas Barlet said some barns and outbuildings were destroyed but no one was injured when at least one tornado struck late Sunday afternoon near the Missouri border.
The Martin family's construction shop was destroyed. The Pleasanton business saw equipment and trailers tossed around as if they were a child's play things.
"It's just unbelievable," said Skyler Martin. "I would have never have guessed that we'd come back and see our whole shop and everything just totally destroyed."
When storms come, the family puts equipment in the barn so it doesn't get hail damage or rained on.
"You see how that worked out. The whole barn is gone now," he said. "We had a pontoon boat sitting by that car. It got blown about 100 yards into a tree line. There was a full semi-trailer that was blown about 300 feet into a tree line. Everything outside is just scattered everywhere."
The family is very grateful for the show of support from area residents.
"It's amazing how the neighbors support us all, and they came out immediately, and it's really humbling to know that you have everybody there to help you out," he said.
A 100-year-old church was destroyed. Live wires surrounded the church, which was no longer being used.
"It was just really hectic and really scary," Martin said. "We have a while to get back on our feet and actually get back to making money."
A tornado watch for the Kansas City area was canceled at 9:45 p.m. It had originally been scheduled to run through 2 a.m.
Nebraska was the first state to report a tornado. The National Weather Service says one touched down Sunday afternoon in a rural area in central Nebraska, but no damage was reported. But authorities in northeastern Oklahoma say a tornado killed two people late Sunday afternoon in the small town of Quapaw near Oklahoma's border with Kansas and Missouri.
Tornadoes in Arkansas also saw damage and injuries.
