JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -
Violent murders on the streets of Jackson have the families of victims crying out for help. We went out into the community to explore three cold case killings. Families members say people know who murdered their loved ones, but there is a code of silence.
Larry Nelson's son was murdered. He knows who did it, there was an arrest, but no conviction. Witnesses were afraid to speak up in his case and a more recent killing according to Nelson.
"This organization, we are asking those individuals out there who know who murdered Rickey Levon Smith to step forward; to help this family with closure because one day it could be your family," said Nelson.
Jackie Whitsett's son was shot in the head and left to die. There was an arrest, again no conviction. She's left with fleeting memories and helps other victims of violence.
"Like, my son had long lanky arms, he would want to throw them around me. Mama, I love you, I truly love you," said Whitsett. "It's so much when you have no closure. At least I know who killed my son even though he's not in jail but she has no closure."
Nelson, President of Victims of Violent Crimes and Whitsett, are champions in the search for killers and closure.
In yet another cold case murder, leads have run dry, witnesses have runaway. Teresa Summers is convinced people know who killed her son but refuse to get involved,
"It hurts, I cry just about every day," said Summers. "I just want justice. If they don't get them off the street they will continue to kill."
Summers reminisced as she looked at her son's baby photos. Holding back tears, she recalls his murder. October 17, 2013, the night the father of two, was lured back to Southdown Arms Apartments after winning a late night dice game.
"Money, money he won, the gambling bet and they wanted it back," said Summers. "So they called him back out there just to rob him and out of his pocket this was the only thing that was left; A dollar."
All that was left on Rickey Smiths bullet-riddled body was a one dollar bill. It remains in a frame with aging photographs. His mom keeps it close. Even closer she holds out a braided piece of hair in her hair.
"Here, I keep it," said Summers. "It's a lock of his hair that I have. I wear it everyday in memory, in memory of my son."
Frustration, sadness and anger have called these parents out to tell their stories. They hold out hope for justice; the glue that can help piece shattered dreams of their son's lives back together.
