OXFORD, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Legendary civil rights figures challenged college graduates at commencement ceremonies in the state Saturday. Proud graduates filled the Grove at Ole Miss for the 161st commencement.

Governor Phil Bryant offered the address. He reflected ability of Mississippians to recover from the natural disasters and even recent tornados that impacted the Magnolia state.

U.S. Congressman John Lewis of Georgia, who marched with Dr. Martin Luther King and led the youth movement during the Civil Rights struggle, was the featured speaker for the University of Mississippi School of Law graduation.

"They have a legacy to uphold, that they can not be silence. They must find a way to get in the way and make a little noise, be courageous," said Rep. Lewis(D) Georgia.

"We have been blind at times in our beloved Mississippi, and now we see a wonderful and bright future that lies ahead for us all," said Governor Phil Bryant (R).

About 2,650 undergraduate and graduate degrees were awarded.
