The search continues this evening for a man who assaulted a police officer a few feet away from a Brandon elementary school. The school was on lockdown after the incident.
Students at Rouse Elementary were dismissed around 2 today when that lockdown was lifted. However there is still heavy police presence at the school because of after school activities and because this man hasn't been caught.
Late Monday afternoon, Rankin County Schools released the following statement:
After speaking with local law enforcement, Rouse Elementary and the Rankin County School District made the decision to place the school on lockdown. All students and faculty went on with their day within the building and were not in harms way at any time. We appreciate the precautionary presence and support of local and county law enforcement on our campus today.
Brandon Police say that shortly after 10 a.m., a Brandon Police Officer saw a man walking on Boyce Thompson Road swinging an ax above his head. When the man saw the officer approaching, he ran in a wooded area.
The officer chased the man on foot and caught up with him. After a brief struggle, the man threw away the ax and was able to get away from the officer and run deeper into the woods.
The officer was assaulted during the struggle but did not have any injuries requiring hospitalization.
The man is described at a 5'-10" African American male, wearing bluejeans and a white sleeveless shirt, had a stubble beard and appeared to be balding.
Police are asking anyone who knows the suspects identity to call Brandon Police at 601-825-7225.
