On four separate occasions, Monday and his team caught a city supervisor helping himself to free fuel at the Garfield Hts. Service Garage on McCracken Rd.
Each time, Bryan Mahoney filled up two five gallon containers and placed them in the trunk of his city vehicle. Mahoney, the Garage Foreman and a former acting Service Director lives in Seven Hills. It was there that Monday found the same containers sitting in his garage.
After viewing clips of Monday's undercover video, Police Chief Robert Sackett said, "It's embarrassing to the city. Everybody in Garfield Hts. has had some financial issues. Everybody has tried to do their part. And to see something like this is a slap in the face. It's an insult."
Hours after watching the video, Garfield Hts. police made a surprise visit to Mahoney's home. Police say they found the gas containers in the garage, and that Mahoney admitted to the theft.
But Monday discovered workers could have been siphoning the city's gas for years, and no one would have known better. After reviewing city files, he found the computerized system hasn't been working in five years. No one was tracking use of the gas. Last year, the city dispensed 76,000 gallons of gas at the service garage and the police station. Not a single record of who was pumping the gas, and into what vehicle. There was no way of knowing how long Bryan Mahoney has been stealing gas, or whether he's the only one.
As part of their investigation, police reviewed video shot by surveillance cameras at the service department yard. But guess, what? None of the cameras were pointed at the pumps.
Late last week, police returned to the garage with Vic Callova. After touring the yard, the Mayor said he wouldn't comment until after their investigation is complete. When pressed on why no one knew the computer system and cameras weren't functioning properly for five years, Callova became hostile, at one point calling reporter Monday a "punk."
Mahoney has been dodging 19 Action News and couldn't be found to get his side of the story.
Mahoney, meanwhile, has been suspended indefinitely. After working with the city some thirty years, he may have run out of gas.
Garfield Hts. Law Director Tim Riley has hired a Special Prosecutor to handle the case.
