The 50th anniversary of freedom summer will be remembered with events throughout the country and here in Mississippi.
Volunteers are needed to help with this historic event.
Freedom summer was
an initiative in June 1964 to register African Americans to vote here in
Organizers are planning events to recognize the accomplishments of hundreds of students, workers and staff that made changes to our state during a time of segregation and inequality.
Mississippi NAACP president Derrick Johnson says these celebrations are not only important to our state's history --- but the nation's.
The Freedom Summer 1964 Anniversary will take place June 25th-29th.
