Hinds County District Attorney Robert Shuler Smith today announced 24-year-old Marquis Deshune Charleston of Jackson has been convicted of Attempted Aggravated Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer, Felon in Possession of a Firearm, and Felony Fleeing or Eluding.
Charleston will be sentenced for these convictions this coming Tuesday.
He faces life without parole as a Habitual Offender, due to prior felony convictions in Hinds County for Receiving Stolen Goods, Convicted Felon with a Firearm, and Sexual Battery.
At the time he committed his most recent offenses Charleston was on probation for Sexual Battery, which has been revoked by the Mississippi Department of Corrections.
He will now serve nine years and one month for this conviction.
At Tuesday's trial jurors heard testimony that on April 19, 2013, Charleston attempted to avoid a road block while driving his girlfriend's car.
A Hinds County Sheriff's Office deputy initiated a traffic stop, with sirens and blue lights.
Charleston refused to pull over. He ran several stop signs and drove 50 MPH through a residential neighborhood as he attempted to flee from the deputy.
Charleston eventually parked at his Verbena St. residence in Jackson.
He ran through the neighborhood with the deputy on his heels.
Charleston then pulled out a handgun and fired over his shoulder at the deputy. Charleston got away, but was later arrested by U.S. Marshals, who found him hiding in an air conditioner vent at another girlfriend's residence.
"Marquis Charleston is only 24-years-old and he already has six felony convictions in Hinds County," said Smith. "His short-lived criminal career will earn him many, many years in the penitentiary."
