JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Laqunn Gary was sentenced to life without parole. He was found guilty last week in the murder of 17-year-old Vizavian Darby.

Gary, 21, and his girlfriend Jamiria Travis were arrested in 2012 for Darby's murder.

Darby died from a gunshot wound to the back of the head.

Darby's mother says Travis set her son up to be killed because Gary wanted Darby's 2011 Dodge Charger.

During the week-long trial last week, jurors heard testimony that Gary and Travis plotted to rob Darby of his rented car.

The two persuaded Darby to take them riding in the Charger, with Gary in the backseat.

As the car was stopped on Markham St. in Jackson, Gary shot Darby in the back of the head.

Evidence showed Gary pulled Darby's body from the Charger, then hid both the murder weapon and a pistol stolen from the victim in an air conditioning unit at a nearby church.

Gary and his girlfriend rode away from the scene of the murder in Darby's Charger, with Gary at the wheel.
