World class ballet dancers in Jackson soon for the USA IBC

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Less than three weeks to go now for the USA International Ballet competition. It's one of the worlds most prestigious dance events. In fact only the IBC is held every four years in only four cities around the world.

The two week 2014 competition begins June 14th. It's been held in Jackson for the past 35 years. The prestigious event rotates between sister cities Varna, Bulgaria, Moscow and Tokyo.

Hundreds of international dancers their coaches and fans from around the globe will soon flood the capitol city. The festival of dance is world class and often a launching pad for the best ballet dancers in the world.

"It brings, it presents our state around the world in a positive light," said Executive Director Sue Lobrano. "For many of the dancers that come here, coaches fans, especially the dancers, this is their first time in the U.S. and it's in Jackson and boy do we have an opportunity to say look what the United States has to offer."

Friends of Thalia Mara Hall are helping fund part of the renovation going on where the IBC will be held.

"She was tired, so tired, so thank goodness the friends of Thalia Mara Hall, that's a non profit organization, came together to help renovate this building and wanted it done before the IBC. Of course it's going to make a difference for all the arts groups," Lobrano told reporters Thursday.

We went inside Thursday to check it out. Walls are being painted, new chairs, lighting, air conditioning is being installed. While there is a great deal of work to finish, the contractor tells us he will meet the deadline; adding Thalia Mara will be restored to the grand lady it once was.
