MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC) - A mother is behind bars for stabbing and killing a man Monday afternoon near the airport.

Teddy bears and American flags mark the spot on Dianne Drive where 23-year-old Steve Wright died after witnesses and police say his best friend's mother stabbed him to death on Memorial Day afternoon.

"It was something between her and Steve O going on and she was denying it, and he was saying that she did it," said witness Chris Pulliam.

Wright's friends would not tell WMC Action News 5 exactly what the argument was about, but the woman charged in his death, neighbor Tequila Benton, has a very lengthy record.

Most of her arrests were for prostitution, many near a church or school, as well as assault and even a carjacking charge.

Witnesses say several people, including Benton and Wright, were laughing and talking until Benton told Wright to leave the property.

A police affidavit says when Wright refused to leave Benton went into the house, got a large butcher knife and started trying to cut Wright several times before stabbing him in the chest in the street, where he died.

After Benton was arrested another woman came out of the house brandishing several large kitchen knives. Fights ensued between families after the stabbing.

"It don't make no sense for him to have to lose his life over words, words. He dead and gone and we'll never see him again," added Pulliam.

Wright's family said they know the Benton's and do not understand it.

"As much as we did for this family to take my nephew away from us. It just don't make no sense," said Terri Love.

Police say Benton admitted to stabbing Wright. She is charged with second-degree murder and is due in court on Wednesday, May 28.
