JPS holds all graduation ceremonies the same day

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

For the first time, Jackson Public Schools have held all of their graduation ceremonies at the same place and on the same day.

Despite the rainy conditions, many people still came out to the Mississippi Coliseum for the ceremonies.

"Class of 2014 we made it!" said one graduate.

They started early Wednesday morning at 9 and continued through the day. We were able to speak to some Callaway High graduates who say traffic was not all that bad.

"To be honest, it was swift," said one student.

"I parked right here so I didn't have any trouble getting in," said another.

A total of seven ceremonies were held inside the Mississippi Coliseum. Hundreds of people in and out as the ceremonies were held back to back.

"I got here around 12 o'clock," said Jaliea Hunter. "It was very congested downtown, but after downtown it was pretty clear. It wasn't a headache at all."

Throughout the day traffic did slightly pick up, but drivers say it was not conditions they were expecting.

"The traffic wasn't as bad as I thought it would be," said Adalis Williams. "It was easier to come here. I took the back way and swiftly, I just came right on in."

Inside the Mississippi Coliseum, crowds cheered on graduates as their names were called.

The final two ceremonies, Lanier and Murrah are expected to draw in larger crowds compared to earlier in the day.
