CANTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

At a time when many companies are trimming their payroll, one Mississippi company is making a large expansion. Thursday, Nissan announced they will be adding 500 of new jobs at their plant in Canton.

The auto manufacturer says the positions will support the production of the new 2015 Nissan Murano crossover, which will be built starting this fall.

"In light of the way the economy is now, it does something to foster a better mentality about our area, that were going to keep everything rolling the way it is," said Senator Kenny Wayne Jones. "Were going to provide jobs in times of hardships, all over the nation, we're dealing with budget crisis."

The Murano will be the eighth vehicle to be made at the Canton plant, and will be the first Murano to be built in the U.S., which will be sold in 100 markets around the world, making Mississippi, a global automobile exporter.

"The most exciting part about the expansion of the Nissan plant, you see companies like tower international growing to help supply 8 different lines of automobiles that are manufactured there so that part will add another 500 employees plus the convenience of being able to add these assembly lines closer to the manufacturing center," said Governor Phil Bryant.

"This this is going to be great for employment in Madison County, in the Jackson metro area," said Madison Senator Will Longwitz. "Nissan employs people from almost every county in the state."

More than 800 support jobs are also coming to a Nissan supplier this fall. Canton, known as the City of Lights, is now quickly becoming known as a world wide car manufacturing hub.
