CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) -

If you're looking for the perfect puppy or companion cat, this weekend may be a good time to get one for free.

This weekend, shelters and rescue leagues across the area will be participating in Maddie's Pet Adoption Days. The national non-profit gives money to organizations that adopt out animals, especially older pets.

"For every animal that gets adopted that meets a certain criteria, the animal shelter receives grant funding per animal, and it all has to be used for animal care," explained  Chesterfield Police Capt. Jason Zaccarine.

In Chesterfield, they'll use the extra money to spay and neuter more adoptable animals. THe event is going on across the region (see below).

"Our goal is that we don't have any animals in the shelter," said Zaccarine. "To find homes for every shelter animal out there. Because the animals that come to our shelter have either lost their homes, been neglected, or fallen on hard times. So if we can find them a new family to be with and be with, it makes a big difference in the animal's lives."

Participants call it a win-win. Families get pets, pets get homes, and the shelters have the potential to earn thousands of dollars to help even more animals.
