MEMPHIS, TN -
(WMC) - Snakes are invading a Memphis apartment complex and the people who live there are fed up.

The distinct odor of moth balls can be smelled at the University Place Apartments public housing complex; it's an attempt by residents to keep the legless reptiles away. As they continue to slither into apartments, residents are scared.

"It was crawling up this brick right here, and it was hanging out the window," noted one resident.

That snake ended up dead and was thrown back over the fence into an overgrown field where neighbors say it came from.

"All of these snakes running around here and those kids playing. It's just horrible," said George Wesley Johnson.

Neighbors say the snakes are a menace, with at least five having been found in the last couple of weeks.

The Memphis Housing Authority owns the field where the snakes are coming from, and residents do not recall the area ever being cut. A person who answered the phone at the Memphis Housing Authority noted that managers know about the snakes and are going to take care of it.
