MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC) - People in Frayser are working to take back their community. Memphis Police Director Toney Armstrong and Memphis City Councilwoman Janis Fullilove hosted a crime summit Thursday.

Community involvement is a component that the two city officials feel is missing in the fight against crime. They're hoping that an alliance with residents will strengthen that fight.

Some residents say they can't walk down their street without being scared.

"The thing that concerns us is the amount of aggravated assaults we've had, the accessibility of guns with young people. It is so easy for kids to get access to a gun," said Armstrong.

Armstrong says it's time to turn the tide on violent crimes across the city, but they can't do it alone.

"I'm hoping that what comes out of this is a commitment from some of the participants of this meeting. That says that 'I recognize what's happening and I'm willing to be a part of the solution,'" he said.

He says residents themselves have to be unafraid to report crimes, no matter how small, and they have to take pride in their surroundings.

"We're going to listen to these residents, because the police cannot be everywhere, but they can be the eyes and the ears of the police ... Taking their communities back," said Fullilove.

Armstrong says they've seen a 4 percent reduction in crime so far this year. Crime summits will take place over the next few weeks in different communities.
