Jackson says goodbye to Southwest Airlines

Posted: Updated:
JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Time is quickly ticking before Southwest Airlines flights in and out of Jackson's Medgar Wiley Evers International airport come to an end.

The last Southwest flight out of Jackson is headed to Houston around 7 Saturday night.

Several customers say they're disappointed about the loss, but airport officials are a bit more optimistic.

Airport officials say the departure of Southwest opens up opportunities for United, Delta and American to pick up some of the slack by accommodating more passengers and operating more flights.

There's no immediate plan in place to fill the Southwest Airlines spot with another airline.

However, the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority board has been aggressively looking for a replacement since news hit that Southwest was leaving.

James Henley Jr., Chairman of the Jackson Municipal Airport Authority Board, says he's optimistic Southwest will give Jackson another shot in the future because of prospective economic development.

"If you think about the fact that they're getting ready to break ground probably in August on that Westin Hotel downtown near the Convention Center and Jackson will now be able to accommodate conferences we couldn't in the past-- how are all those people going to get to Jackson? They're going to fly into this airport. I'm looking forward to the day 3 to 4 years from now when Southwest is knocking on the door saying, 'Can we come back?'."
