JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A retired Jackson ophthalmologist, charged in the shooting death of his wife, has died, according to his attorney Cynthia Speetjens.

Mayfield reportedly died sometime over the weekend.

Dr. William Mayfield shot his wife Susan Mayfield, 67, in their home on St. Andrews Drive on April 30.

Jackson Police say it appeared a dispute between the two took place before the 66-year-old doctor shot his wife with a shotgun in the stomach.

His attorney told us the physician suffered from Parkinson's disease and the disturbance may have stemmed from medications he was prescribed.

Speetjens previously told us that she believes that Dr. Mayfield was not competent when he shot his wife. She considers the shooting, a tragedy in it's purest form.

About a month ago, Mayfield was transferred to St. Dominic hospital after he was reportedly found non-responsive in jail.

At that time, Speetjens told us that he was found to be in acute renal failure.

Speetjens could not comment any further today until she has talked with the Mayfield family.
