Monday's storm damaged several structures in Athens, include the steeple of Hispanic First Baptist Church in Athens.
The church is located on North Madison Street near 8th Avenue.
The steeple of the church snapped sideways during the storm.
There was also damage in residential areas, such as Gale Lane, where one woman said a tree crashed into her house Monday night.
Some trees in the area were cracked at the trunk by heavy winds. Others were brought down completely.
An uprooted tree ripped out the concrete of Jane Farmer's porch. She said she heard the storm kick up outside, then next thing she knew, a tree limb smashed through a window.
"I was home by myself about 10 o'clock," Farmer recalled. "I was picking up a few things around the house, getting ready for bed. And I heard a 'whoosh' sound, and then I hear glass breaking. I thought the storm had really hit me."
Farmer said she was initially worried her home was about to be "gone with the wind," but those winds died down quickly. She was able to quickly survey the damage. The uprooted tree had destroyed the concrete porch, and besides the limb through one window, the rest of the tree had landed gently on the top of the house.
The Farmers are hopeful the tree didn't do too much damage to the roof. Jane said it is not leaking, so that is a good sign.
