MOSS POINT, MS (WLOX) -

It's the surprising announcement everyone in Moss Point is talking about: After three years as police chief, Keith Davis has turned in his two weeks notice.

Friday, we stopped by the popular shopping spot Four Seasons Produce to see what residents thought about losing their city's top cop.

"I'm upset he's leaving," Mona Amis said. "I was upset when he threw his name in for the sheriff's spot because we need him in Moss Point."

"he has had a lot of mess to clean up and he has done a very, very good job," Jean Braun said. "He's done a wonderful job and it is very shocking he is resigning without giving a reason."

That reason will likely come after the Board of Aldermen officially accept the chief's resignation. Davis told WLOX News on Thursday, he will not talk publicly about his decision until it is officially accepted.

"I don't think there is any question about it, he was well respected and everyone appreciated him," Vernon Hudgins said.

Disappointment was the common feeling shared by all the shoppers who talked with us.

"I really hate to hear that he resigned," Minnie Dickson said, "because he was doing a great job."

Those like Dickson, who live in the community, said they have experienced a difference in the three years Chief Davis has been in charge.

"I notice drug traffic has kind of slowed down," Dickson said.

"We have had problems in our neighborhood," Braun said, "but we have had quick response and better patrol."

Amis said, "The police chief has done an excellent job with the youth; He has organized all these different programs for the youth."

Even shoppers who did not live in the city said they have noticed a transformation in Moss Point.

"I have seen a lot of change in the Moss Point people and attitudes since he has been here," Charles Persons said. "Good guy."

"I think that Moss Point is actually losing a good person, a good person as chief. Because, you know, I watch the news all the time and I know he was actually getting the crime under control," Betty Donaldson said.

City officials are expected to discuss the chief's resignation at Tuesday's board meeting.
