HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Former presidential candidate and retired Texas congressman Ron Paul endorsed Republican U.S. Senate candidate Chris McDaniel during a rally in Hattiesburg Saturday afternoon.

The event, in support of the 2nd amendment, was held in the parking lot of Gander Mountain on Highway 98.

Paul ran twice for president as a Republican and once as a Libertarian.  He retired from Congress last year.

McDaniel faces longtime GOP incumbent Thad Cochran in the June 24th runoff.

Paul told those attending the rally that he met Cochran during the 1970s when he first entered Congress.  He said Cochran has been in Washington, "way too long."

"You've made great strides already in this campaign and I think the momentum is there and this crowd is great," Paul said. "I think you're going to see a great victory next week from Tuesday, so everybody be energized, that's what's so important," he said.

"I think all the endorsements are outstanding, whether it's Rick Santorum, or Sarah Palin, or Phyllis Schlafly, or Ron Paul," said McDaniel. "We welcome those endorsements and it just goes to show that the grass roots are excited," he said. He added, "Conservatives in this country are ready to take back this government. We saw it in Virginia. You're going to see it in Mississippi on the 24th."

Paul also spoke about foreign polilcy during the rally, while McDaniel also addressed education reform.
