JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

George E. Newell Jr.of Ridgeland has entered a plea in charges related to the death of 13-year-old Ray Echols.

The 42-year-old entered an "open plea" on the charges of manslaughter and felony leaving the scene.

The "open plea" is a plea agreement where the determination of sentencing is left to the trial court's discretion. In other words he plead guilty without an agreement regarding punishment.

In November of 2011, Echols, a sixth-grader at Powell Middle School in Jackson, and a friend were riding their bicycles on Watkins Drive.

Newell struck Echols in his pickup truck and killed him.

Authorities said Newell left the scene of the accident, without trying to help or calling police.

Edward will be sentence July 21 by Hinds County Circuit Judge Winston Kidd.

"I am very pleased we are able to extradite this matter on behalf of the victim Ray Echols", said Smith.  "We were very pleased with the guilty plea. I certainly hope this guilty plea will rendered Ray Echols's family some closure."  Smith further stated, "Young Echols was a smart and inspiring young man who had a bright future ahead of him and his life was cut way to short."
