SHELBY COUNTY, TN -
(WMC) - Commissioner Terry Roland says supporters of Commissioner Henri Brooks passed out a flier before Thursday's special-called meeting. Roland says the flier falsely accuses him of trying to have Brooks removed from the upcoming ballot for juvenile court clerk.
This comes after a heated exchange between the two during the meeting. Brooks came to her own defense Thursday, arguing that there's no proof that she doesn't live in her district.
"I would hope we would disengage ourselves from this high-tech lynching," she said.
Three times during the meeting, Roland tried to have Brooks' votes thrown out, saying she's doesn't live in the district she represents. The county confirmed earlier this week that a residency investigation is underway.
"I resent that remark she made about lynching. We all know the area we live in now, and it's bringing worse things on the commission," said Roland.
"It goes against the integrity of a member that is casting a vote in light of the fact that there haven't been any findings," said Brooks.
Brooks asked that Roland's requests be stricken from the record because there is no proof to his argument.
Meanwhile, Roland says he's not giving up on Brooks' residency issue until she comes up with proof of her own.
"We will carry this to the proper authorities, even the DA. If we have to get a special prosecutor from another county, we will push this," he said.
The flier, distributed by CORR, the Commission on Religion and Racism, also demands commissioner Roland to end a "witch hunt persecution" of commissioner Brooks. Meanwhile, Roland defends himself saying he's tired of the race card trumping the rule of law.
The special meeting was called to address an issue that's already surrounded by controversy, minority contracts and whether they are diverse enough. That is in response to commissioner Henri Brooks' tirade that was caught on camera.
"You asked to come here; we did not. And when we got here our conditions was so ugly and so barbaric; don't ever let that come out of your mouth again," said Brooks in .
The commission looked into hiring someone to conduct a disparity study on county contracts. That person or group would advise the commission on whether there is legal basis to change any current policies to add more diversity with businesses contracting with the county.
