Parkway construction to start soon

PEARL, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

If you've driven on Flowood drive during rush hour, you know there's a need for more roads to handle all the traffic.

Now officials in two cities say they've teamed up to build that much needed space to handle travel concerns in that growing area.

Next week work is expected to begin on the new West Rankin Parkway, turning this wooded area into a much needed connector road.

The road would extend Pearson Road in Pearl, north, all the way up to Treetops Boulevard in Flowood.

Pearl Mayor Brad Rogers said, "It's going to be another north south connector which will help us out dramatically in moving traffic. When we have issues on I-20 which forces a lot of traffic to highway 80 it's a very important project."

It's will cost 7 million dollars to build the 3 and a half mile road. Forty percent will be in Pearl and 60 percent will be in Flowood.

Both cities hope to capitalize on growth in the new area.

Mayor Rogers said, "Were looking for some areas to develop residentially, and I believe there's going to be some nice residential subdivisions built in the area, and with that again commercial development comes also, so we think it's going to be a real positive for the west end of Rankin county, and definitely a positive for Pearl and Flowood."

The parkway will be five lanes with a boulevard.

Drivers can plan for newly constructed intersections where it intersects existing roads, but with it, less traffic during their commute, and more to see and do along the way.

Rogers said, "You have to have roads to open up property, and that sector of property has been undeveloped for a long time but the reason is because there's no way of getting up in there, so it will be opening up a big block for our future development."
