PASCAGOULA, MS (WLOX) -
A Pascagoula woman who's infant daughter suffered irreversible brain damage pleaded guilty to three counts of felony child abuse Friday.
Erika Folmer, 23, was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Twenty-five years will be served behind bars, the other five will be on post release supervision. Folmer must also pay a $6,000 fine, court costs, and $1000 to the Mississippi Children's Trust Fund.
Folmer was arrested after her daughter was treated for a broken arm, numerous skull fractures, and was diagnosed with irreversible brain damage. She's accused of abusing the baby from July 19 through November 19, 2013.
"This defendant committed horrendous acts of abuse upon her own daughter and because of those acts, this child will suffer for the rest of her life," District Attorney Tony Lawrence said. "This child was seriously and permanently injured by the person who, by nature, should have protected her. So often we worry about the danger our children face in the world outside of their family, but this danger came from within. The sentence by this Court will prevent the defendant from harming any other children and serves as notice that the acts by anyone upon helpless and defenseless children will be met with swift and certain justice."
"There are no words that capture the gravity or depravity of this crime," Assistant District Attorney Angel Myers said. "This precious baby went from having a lifetime of promise to a lifetime of recovery and an uncertain future. The Pascagoula Police Department and the medical teams at Singing River Hospital and USA Women's and Children's Hospital should be commended for their outstanding work in this case and their care of this baby girl."
