Work complete on Pod C of the Hinds County Detention Center

HINDS COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

After two million dollars worth of emergency upgrades, Pod C of the Hinds County Detention center is close to reopening. The pod was damaged when a riot broke out in July of 2012. Seven inmates were injured and one killed.

The doors have a new locking system so inmates can no longer let themselves out.

The ceiling has a heavy gauge wire barrier under the sheet rock so inmates can't get out through the ceiling.

There is also a state-of-the-art monitoring system that can lockdown each Pod individually. The same upgrades are slated for Pods A and B.

''The court order advises when we open up Pod C we have to renovate Pod A and Pod B," said Hinds County Sheriff Tyrone Lewis. "We are now making accommodations, meeting with the board and county administrators, to move forward with that. We can't give you a time line."

Under an emergency court order and now US Justice Department investigation the upgrades come after years of riots and security breeches.
