Cell phone thieves target victims in Clinton

CLINTON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Local law enforcement is warning residents that thieves are after their expensive electronic devices. Clinton police say they're working a recent rash of cell phone thefts.

Police say the thieves are approaching people, saying they're having an emergency, and need to use a phone.

After victims give them their cell phones, they make a distraction, and then flee with the devices. Expensive newer model iPhones are being targeted, because of their re-sell value.

Three phones have been stolen in this same manner since Sunday.

"We think there's more than one, up to several," said Clinton Police Chief Michael Warren. "We do have some good information that we're working on and we're trying to get a person identified. As soon as we get that person identified we'll take steps to get that person arrested and see where that leads us."

Wednesday Clinton and Jackson police detained two men trying to return a phone to the owner off Highway 80.

After questioning both individuals for a short time, they were finally let go.

The suspects are said to be driving a dark colored sedan, possibly a Toyota or Hyundai with a Texas tag.

Anyone with information is asked to call Clinton Police at 601-924-5252.
