MEMPHIS, TN -

(NBC) - The trip down the grocery aisle this Fourth of July is set to be a pricey one.

With prices rising dramatically on everything from ground beef to tomatoes, shopping experts have come up with ways to get frugal with your shopping list.

"The smartest strategy for your Fourth of July party or barbecue, is to think about your menu and build it around the sales that are happening," said TheGroceryGame.com CEO Teri Gault.

Gault recommends checking the newspaper circulars and, for example, choose chicken instead of cheeseburgers and corn on the cob, which is cheaper than chips.

She went on to point out that grocery stores generally offer their best bargains around the fourth, which provides a great opportunity to stock up on non-perishable items.

"The condiments, mayonnaise, mustard, barbecue sauce, marinade. All of these things are going to be the cheapest of the whole year until Labor Day that is, and they have a long shelf life, up to a year," said Gault.

She expects competition among grocery stores to really heat up by Tuesday.

"The supermarkets view this as a time sort of court you," she explained. "A lot of people go grocery shopping who never did before, just because tis' a holiday."
