MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Golfers in Madison County are taking in a different sight and smell on the green at Lake Caroline.

Smoke filled the air around the Lake Caroline Golf Club after fire destroyed the structure early Saturday morning.

"We tried to get it out with an extinguisher but it didn't work," said Lake Caroline Golf Club owner Randy Watkins.

Sometime shortly after 8:30 Saturday morning Watkins escaped his business and took pictures of his golf club filled with flames shooting out of the roof.

"I wasn't in the building long before I could smell the smoke we ran upstairs and there was a fire in the attic," said Watkins.

The intense flames left the golf club unrecognizable. Windows are shattered, wood is charred, the building is in skeleton form and the roof collapsed in. According to Gluckstadt fire Chief Henry Davis it took the Gluckstadt and Madison fire departments about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control. Once the fire was out golfers still had the chance to tee off, but getting on the green just wasn't the same for golfer Don Waldrop.

"It was very depressing you know when you are on the tee and you come back and see the destruction of the clubhouse," said Waldrop.

Watkins said he plans to rebuild bigger and better. Although the physical home for his business is gone, the golf course remains intact, which means business will still go on.

"It was hard to watch I'll be honest with you it was hard to watch it go down like that it's just stuff and nobody was hurt," said Watkins.

Gluckstadt Fire Chief Henry Davis said a construction crew was working on the golf club when the fire started, but Davis can't confirm if construction work started the blaze. The cause remains under investigation.
