The Mississippi Highway Patrol was on the look out for drunk drivers and others who violated the law over the holiday weekend.

MHP concluded its Fourth of July enforcement period which began Thursday, July 3, at 6 pm and ended Sunday, July 6 at midnight.

MHP says that they issued 6,555 citations with 203 DUI arrests over the weekend.

According to Lieutenant Johnny Poulos with MHP, there was a huge decrease in the amount of accidents investigated on July 4th weekend in comparison to last year.

Poulos said that unfortunately, they did see an increase in fatalities.

In 2013, MHP issued a total of 8,747 citations, compared to this year's 6,555 citations.

In the 2013 holiday weekend, MHP issued 334 seat belt violations. This year, however, only 254 were issued.

Poulos also said that they saw a decrease in DUI arrests. On the July 4th weekend in 2013, MHP made 259 DUI arrests, compared with this past weekend's 203 DUI arrests.

Poulos credits this to the responsible decisions made by the public.

"We need to pay attention and not be distracted on the roads...and not just during holiday periods," said Poulos.

MHP 2014 July 4th holiday totals are as follows:

Total collisions investigated - 120

Alcohol related collisions - 5

Total injuries - 58

Fatalities - 7

Fatalities wearing seatbelts - 0
