YAZOO COUNTY, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A close call for law enforcement in two counties Monday; a shooting and high-speed chase ended with two suspects in custody and one injured. The pursuit on Highway 49 ended in Yazoo County, more than 20 miles from where it began.

"My office received a report of a possible burglary in progress on Childress Lane in Flora," said Madison County Sheriff Randy Tucker.

Once deputies responded, three suspects ran out of the house, got into a black Chevy SUV and put one deputy in danger.

"[They] fled at a high rate of speed, attempted to strike one deputy, at least that I know of at this time," said Sheriff Tucker.

While being shot at, deputies returned fire, hitting one suspect. The SUV's back window was broken during the exchange of gunfire.

At that point the chase began. How it ended, Sheriff Tucker said, was unexpected. The SUV stopped dead a few miles from Yazoo City.

"It was evidently a mechanical issue, a motor, a transmission issue that the vehicle had," said Sheriff Tucker. "It was from nothing that we did."

The suspects' names have not been released. Yazoo County Sheriff Jacob Sheriff says he expects more arrests in the case.

But right now, Sheriff Tucker says he's glad it wasn't worse.

"There are a number of firearms in the vehicle; some assault weapons, pistols, things of that nature that the suspects had access to," said Sheriff Tucker. "It could have been a really bad situation."

Sheriff Sheriff said he believes these suspects are wanted in at least one Madison County house burglary and could also be behind burglaries in his county as well.

The suspect who was shot is at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and is expected to recover from his injuries.
