JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

School starts in about six weeks and the Jackson Public School District is dealing with 206 teacher vacancies. That's according to the JPS Website.

It breaks down this way:

  • 68 elementary school vacancies
  • 67 middle school vacancies
  • 48 in the high schools
  • 23 special education teachers

We checked other cities and counties as well and it appears there are a dozen or fewer teacher vacancies in surrounding school districts.

JPS Superintendent Dr. Cedric Gray encourages people to apply.

"We are being able to fill those vacancies at this time of the year and the system our size it requires all hands on deck and I'm do excited we're being able to fill those," said Dr. Gray. "Parents should know that there will be a caring adult in every classroom."

To apply for the openings, go to the JPS website.
