(WMC) - What started out as a drug bust ended in an animal rescue; nearly 50 cats and dogs were found hoarded inside of a home.

The animals were living in what are described as disgusting conditions in Marshall County, and now the people that lived in the house are in jail.

"I was concerned about what was going on," said neighbor R.T. Moss, who saw the bust.

Investigators were searching for marijuana, which was found growing inside pots. But that was not all...

"Puppies, large dogs, small cats, and large cats," Kelly McMillen with the Marshall Co. Sheriff Department said. "It's a place where you wouldn't expect a human to be living."

Investigators say a suspect lived in the home with his mom. Both are in custody, but investigators are not releasing their names. Neighbors say they kept to themselves.

"You never see them out. They'll get in their vehicle and leave. As far as I know, they don't communicate with anyone," Moss said.

Rescue groups from Marshall County and Collierville are working to get the dogs to shelters.

Meanwhile the homeowners face drug charges and animal abuse charges.
