Child once considered functionally cured of H-I-V has relapsed

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Doctors at U-M-M-C say the child once considered functionally cured of H-I-V, now has detectable levels of the virus. Dr. Hannah Gay, who has been treating the child, says this latest development was like a "punch to the gut".

Doctors started treating the baby immediately after birth, after learning the mother was infected and had not received any prenatal care.

A year and a half later, the mother admitted she'd stopped giving the baby her medicine. But tests showed the baby seemed clear of the virus.

Then last week-- more than two years later-- tests confirmed the child had an active H-I-V infection....Meaning that when the child was not showing signs of the virus, there was likely an undetectable reservoir of the virus within the child's body.

The child, now almost 4 years old, is now being treated again, and the viral load seems to be dropping.
