VICKSBURG, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

It is a goal she has been working on since she was 13-years-old and has finally realized the dream of becoming Miss Mississippi 2014.  Jasmine Murray has written and recorded music in Nashville, and now hopes to sing before a national audience when she represents Mississippi at the Miss America Pageant.

The preparation is already underway for Jasmine Murray. She has already met with the Miss Mississippi board and Sunday night began working on her talent for the Miss America Pageant in September.

"We began talking about preparation," said Murray. "Picking out wardrobe, making sure that paperwork is in and everything and so, working on talent."

Murray says this year she took a different and more personal approach to competing.

"This year, I really wanted to focus on making sure that people understood who I was as a person and wanting them to be able to see different sides of me," said Murray. "And that included from being able to promote my 13 Going On 30 ambassador program to involving more girls in that to promote that, to changing my talent up completely."

While being Miss Mississippi is a dream come true Murray tells us, she is hopeful of becoming the fifth young woman from this state to win the Miss America crown. The last time was Susan Akin in 1985.

"Its hard , it's very, very hard to pay for school sometimes and the Miss America organization focuses on education and they want these girls to be successful, said Murray. "They want them to have opportunities but I also think one of the most important aspects of this organization is service and reaching out to Americans and helping them to understand that service is so important and that you can really impact someone else's life by what you do, and what you say and how you help them is extremely important."

Murray is a student at Mississippi State University. Monday she made her first official visit with the patients at Blair E. Batson Children's Hospital.
