New scam alert: telephone callers offering government grants

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A new scam concerning government school grants is hitting several Mississippians.

The Better Business Bureau serving Mississippi is urging residents to watch out for telephone calls on school grants.

The calls appear to be coming from the (202) area code, which is typically out of the Washington D.C. area.

The recipients of these calls say they are told they have "won" something or have been "selected to receive" anything from a grant for tuition, housing payment, or automobile purchase.

The callers are saying they are government workers offering up to $9,000 in grant money.

The red flag comes when the consumers are asked to purchase a Green Dot MoneyPak card loaded with $400-$500 in order to pay handling fees.

Consumers have also been asked to give out credit card numbers and other banking information.

BBB is reminding consumers that government grants cannot be received unless you have applied for them.

They are also telling consumers that the government does not call residents for these purposes.

BBB urges everyone to never give out sensitive banking or credit card information.
