Training sessions underway for take home laptops

MADISON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

In Madison County, school starts August 7th, but Tuesday students and parents were back in the classroom.

They left with plenty of homework.

Students left with their own personal laptop, provided by the district.

"It's a lot easier than having textbooks," said freshman Abby Wright.

This Rosa Scott student is in this first class of tech savvy students who underwent training with her parents Tuesday.

"I think it's a good idea because in college you use laptops a lot, so it's kind of preparing us for like high school and college," added Wright.

4,400 laptops were purchased by the district for its more than 3,800 students and teachers in the high schools.

Tuesday was the second day of computer distribution, training and instruction with parents and students

"They've added engineering. They've added all sorts of computer classes and they're really trying to make the kids more marketable when they become a professional, marketable as students for colleges," said Madison county parent Susan Draughn.

"I think it's a great opportunity that our school district has given all these children laptops to use and to develop technology in our school district," said parent Susanne Blalock.

The laptops will be scanned and assigned to the student for the next three years. They will be returned to the district at the end of each school year.

"We have a filter on every laptop that goes home and students can not access web sites that are required by law but they can not access adult content or peer to peer downloading content," said Madison County schools Director of Technology Gavin Guynes.

Using the devices for social networking is permitted if allowed by the parents.

Tracking system software can located the device if it is lost or stolen.

The Mac laptop training sessions and distribution will be held over the next two weeks.
