My Turn: Negative comments from public officials could deter new businesses

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

There is intense competition among states, counties and cities for businesses and industries looking to build plants and employ local people.

There are tax and other incentives to lure potential employers to an area.

A lot of confidential negotiations go on behind the scenes with economic developers and governments before a final commitment is made.

Now I don't know what industry is considering the land in Hinds County, but I do know this, comments made by public officials can influence a decision.

Imagine what a future employer thinks when he hears these comments:

"If you want to say it's ok to build a gun plant then, we feel that gun plants is the same as dope dealers. You know we believe we shouldn't have dope dealers in these communities and we shouldn't have gun plants in these communities. They destroy lives" said Hinds County Supervisor Kenneth Stokes.
