JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Today in the department's weekly COMSTAT meeting, Interim Chief Lee Vance addressed the dozens of commanders and officers for the first time as acting chief.

While he thanked former Chief Horton for his service, he also looked ahead to other things he'll be focusing on in the meantime to help the department move forward.

Chief Vance says he wants officers to focus more on customer service and follow-up visits when helping victims of crime in the city.

He also said they need to address morale issues in the department.

While there's no word on how long he'll be interim chief, Chief Vance said he'd like to take it one step further.

"Mayor Yarber gave me an opportunity to apply. And I told him that I absolutely would apply, and I'm going to put my best foot forward as far as seeking this job permanently."

Chief Vance said he was grateful to Mayor Tony Yarber for the opportunity to serve in this capacity and says the mayor has promised to give him and the department whatever they need to make the police department better in the long run.

Of course, the subject of JPD's future and the mayor's stance on crime are just two issues that could be addressed in tonight's State of the City.
