Juliette Lockett's family says the stress of witnessing the death of her neighbor while he tried to protect her from armed robbery suspects was too much for the Birmingham woman to bear.

Lockett passed away last weekend of a heart attack.

Last month, police say 53-year old Arthur Mills was shot to death trying to protect Lockett.

"For somebody to come put up guns on you. I mean an older lady and then three guns put on you. It's horrible," said Yvette Sims, Lockett's daughter.

Sims said after the scary ordeal her mother, normally full of life and laughter, was never the same.

"I saw her change. She was just not the same. She was quiet," said Sims. "You can tell she was always thinking. She said she relieved it over and over and over again."

Sims said last week her mom got sick and was admitted to the hospital. Lockett died on July 19 of a heart attack.

Sims strongly believes her mother's death was brought on by the robbery and fatal shooting.

"I do. It was stressful for her. It was just too much," said Sims. "Just very fearful. I saw her change from that day to the day she died."

On Thursday she was making final preparations for her mother's funeral. She said she feels like she's in a bad dream. Her mother was her best friend.

"She always had a kind word to say, always smiling, always giving. It's just a big chunk of happiness, seems like, was taken away from me," said Sims.

Family and friends will say their final goodbyes to Lockett this weekend.

Her funeral is Saturday, July 26 at Trinity Baptist Church in Birmingham at 11:00 a.m. She'll be buried at Elmwood Cemetery.

There were three suspects in that fatal robbery, but only one was caught. Davarius McGee, 22, was charged with capital murder, attempted murder and robbery.
