JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Shortly before the mayor gave his State of the City address on Thursday evening, witnesses say Little Caesar's Pizza on McDowell Road was the target of a thief.

When the suspect, identified by police as 22-year-old Darnell Griffith, didn't get any money, he robbed the Dollar General Store next door of an undisclosed amount of cash.

It happened around 6 pm.

The unidentified witness said, "The two employees that was in there, they left and so he jumped behind the counter; he tried to get money out of the register and went to the next register and tried to get money out; he couldn't get money out. He jumped back across the counter. He's like, I'll get something."

The man says Griffith turned the gun on him and another patron and demanded money, unsuccessfully.

Griffith eventually fled in a red Impala which crashed into a tree and fence at the Cypress Pointe apartments.

That's where he took off on foot.

He was captured after a short chase off West McDowell Road.

Griffith is charged with two counts of armed robbery of a business.
