I-20 reconstruction begins

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

The barriers are just beginning to go up, and lane closures will start at any time. MDOT crews plan to reconstruct I-20 between the Natchez Trace and Highway 18 exits in Jackson and Clinton, and they want motorists well aware of the work that will stretch until September2015.

"We did lower the speed limit from 70 to 60 miles per hour. We do have the double fines active in the construction zone," says MDOT Engineer Brian Ratliff.

Water has gotten under the roadway and washed out some of the dirt. It's called slide. Repairing the McRaven Road bridge is part of the project.

Most of the work will take place at night, so expect lane closures between 7pm and 6am Monday through Friday. Traffic should be fully open during the week day. But some of the road work will require lane closures all weekend long.

Ratliff says the inconvenience will pay off in the long run.

"We'll mill up the asphalt and put two lifts of asphalt between Highway 18 and the Natchez Trace," he says.

The project also includes landscaping at the Springridge Road exit.

90 percent of the 15-million dollar project will be funded with Federal dollars.
