JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Some elderly citizens of Jackson's Washington Addition are getting a helping hand with the upkeep of their property thanks to a couple of men I told you about at the first of the month.

I first introduced you to Timothy Liddell and John Knight on July 3rd.

"This summer here will be the worst summer we've ever seen, if we don't get something for these kids to do," said Liddell.

Both men grew up in Washington Addition and both spent time in prison for crimes they committed here. But the two vowed to find a way to take back this neighborhood and try to keep youngsters from going down the same dead end street they traveled.

"So, I was blessed by God to be out; get another chance in life to start over and try to help, because I caused a lot of chaos out here dealing drugs," said John Knight.

Both decided a clean up campaign was the first step, and on Saturday, July 26th, the men, along with others who share their vision, got to work, despite the sweltering heat, as reported by WLBT's Jewel Hillary.

"It's nothing like coming back home to help build your home back when you help tear it down because that's what I did," said Knight.

"It's a blessing to be able to be here to do these things for the senior citizens in Washington Addition because they deserve it," added Liddell. "They don't need to be afraid to sit on their porch because somebody might be in the bushes."

Liddell and Knight say their clean up campaign is ongoing and they will also continue their effort to turn this abandoned building into a useful place for the children of Washington Addition, eventually taking back this neighborhood and making it a community worthy of pride.
