JPD command staff does ride along

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Leaders of the Jackson Police Department are hitting the streets to address morale issues in the department. Thursday, members of the command staff teamed up with officers from Precinct One, for a ride along.

The commanders are joining officers on their beats, in hopes of developing better communication within the department.

Interim Chief Lee Vance says this is an opportunity to hear from those lower in the ranks, about what they think needs to be done to improve work conditions and community relations.

Chief Vance was paired with 10 year precinct 1 officer Lorenzo Williams.

"Always when you're in any operation, the people that are out on the street, the people on the front lines, they know better about what is going on in these streets more than anybody," said Vance.

It's also a chance for department leaders to get out into the community and listen to concerns of the residents they're sworn to protect and serve.

"If an officer feels that he or she is being treated fairly, and that the command staff, the administration cares about them, I think you're going to have an officer that's more readily prepared to go out and do what the command staff asks them to do," said Vance. "That's what we hope to accomplish by this."
