Learning how to defend yourself

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A class of adults and children get a good workout in the B & B Tae Kwon Do karate class. In addition to the fitness, the class is also learning how to defend themselves.

"You never know when it might come in handy you could be walking down the street or walking right over here and somebody could rob you or mug you," said twelve year-old Dayonna Stamps.

Stamps and her friends are typically showing off their dance moves representing the Maya Christine Dance Company, but Saturday morning they decided to join the karate class at B & B Tae Kwon Do.

"Girls need to start taking classes so they can actually know what to do," said Stamps.

One move that you can use if you're ever attacked from behind is twisting, stepping back with your head down and using something as simple as a pen to attack you attacker.

Stamps said "we learned that if somebody came attacking you, if they grab your arm you can just push them away. If they try to grab you from the chest you can actually just grab onto the stomach and push their thumb down."

According to JPD's crime stats through July 27th rapes have increased by 25% compared to the same time last year. The thought of getting attacked is frightening to most, but instructors at B & B say if you can defend yourself, you have a chance to survive.

"The moves that we taught them are just general moves to try to get away from an attacker most of the time when woman are being attacked the male or female thinks they're going to overpower them and the moves we showed them are moves that anyone can easily get out," said Bernard Moore, a student and instructor at B & B.

Red belt Javarius Jordan may be small...but he's strong. His moves have helped save his life. Jordan said while you're defending yourself "you gotta scream loud, real loud so if someone can possibly hear you and save your life."
