JPS A/C units vandalized or stolen, 7 schools affected

JACKSON, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

Several Jackson public schools could be in for some hot school days to start the new school year. Theft and vandalism will impact air conditioning at several schools.

JPS is getting the parts to replace or repair approximately 50 stolen or damaged Heating and Ventilation Air Conditioning units. Replacing some of the units could take up to 6-8 weeks.

The total coast for all repairs/replacements is estimated at $250,000.

The following JPS schools have been affected by this situation:

  • Baker Elementary School
  • Lake Elementary School
  • Lee Elementary School
  • Lester Elementary School
  • Sykes Elementary School
  • Powell Middle School
  • Lanier High School

The District has developed an action plan with each school principal whose students and staff may be negatively affected by higher than usual building temperatures after school begins. JPS will notify parents of the affected schools about the challenges and contingency plans for maintaining a comfortable learning environment.

JPS' Campus Enforcement Department is conducting an investigation into the vandalism and increasing patrols around all JPS school and office sites.
