Official: Ridgeland child started house fire playing with lighter

RIDGELAND, MS (Mississippi News Now) -

A Ridgeland family is safe after a fire started in their home shortly after 4 a.m.

An official with the Ridgeland Fire Department says a child in the home started the fire after playing with a lighter and paper.

Authorities say the child was dared to do it by another child.

The homeowner was able to put out the fire by the time the Ridgeland Fire Department arrived on scene.

No one was injured.

    The Mississippi Highway Patrol is looking for a driver who ran away from the scene of a deadly crash in George County. Three children were killed in the crash. Troopers said a green 2003 Kia Optima was heading east on Highway 198, east of Depot Road, shortly before 4 p.m. on Saturday.
