Wellness Wednesday: "Do you want fries with that?" Just say NO!

You don't always have to change the entrée to improve the nutritional quality of a meal. Often all it takes is a simple side dish swap out.

French fries are a serious contender for the unhealthiest food that people eat regularly.

Saying yes to, "Do you want fries with that?" sets the stage for becoming overweight and increases your risk for serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease.

About one quarter of the vegetables consumed in America is fries. That's not one quarter of potatoes, that's one quarter of all vegetables in total!

Americans now eat an average of four servings of French fries every week for every man, woman and child.

The problem is that a medium side of fries often has more fat grams than the burger it accompanies!

Here is the perfect opportunity to do a simple side dish swap out and save big!

The average medium fry has 390 calories, 20 grams of fat, and 370 mg of sodium!

Swap Fries for Healthier Side Dishes
• Side salad with dressing on the side.
• Fresh fruit cup, or fruit and yogurt parfait.
• Request baked chips, or a baked potato.
• Grilled, steamed, or raw vegetables complement any meal.

Parent tip- Often younger children prefer the taste and texture of raw vegetables over cooked; be sure to introduce both.

And remember, all foods in moderation. If you're a lover of French Fries experiment with baking rather than frying them at home, and make them exception not the rule when dining out.
